Project Description
The existing signalized intersection of Lancaster Road (PA Route 72) and Sun Hill Road is in close
proximity to the stop-sign controlled “T” intersection of Sun Hill Road and Oak Street, causing this
complex intersection to be poorly-performing. As part of its development activities, Penn Township
and the PA Department of Transportation (PennDOT) required our client to improve this intersection,
including Oak Street, via roadway/lane and signalization improvements.
Left-turn lanes were designed for the Lancaster Road and Sun Hill Road approaches and the
intersection’s signalization was redesigned to incorporate the Oak Street/Sun Hill Road intersection.
Consequently, the overall safety of the intersection was improved even though unique challenges
had to be addressed.
This project’s design and construction was submitted to the Pennsylvania State Association of
Township Supervisors (PSATS) for consideration of a “Road & Bridge Safety” award. The
intersection placed second in its category.
